Montreal's period instrument ensemble, Pallade Musica, was chosen as the grand prize winner at the first Baroque Performance Competition in New York City on Oct. 10. Six finalist ensembles competed in a concert at Corpus Christi Church and Pallade Musica was awarded the $3,000 grand prize.

The only Canadian ensemble among the finalists, Pallade Musica brings together four of Montreal's brightest young early music specialists: Tanya LaPerrière, violin; Elinor Frey, cello; Esteban La Rotta, theorbo and Mylène Bélanger, harpsichord.

The competition was presented by Gotham Early Music Scene and sponsored by Early Music America to promote the career development of new and emerging period instrument ensembles. In addition to a cash award, the grand prize includes bookings on four prestigious early music concert series.

The Sebastians, a New York-based ensemble, won the $1,000 audience prize.
