My favourite band outta Vancouver these days is the seven-piece experimental
rock group, Fond of Tigers. They’re led by a gifted guitarist named
Stephen Lyons who plays these really hypnotic, twisted riffs while the
crashing rhythms of two drummers and thudding bass collide with the
soaring, oddly cohesive sound of trumpet, violin, and piano. It’s a
crazy, devastatingly powerful sound live and they’ve captured really
well over their last few records.
On
their new album Continent & Western, Fond of Tigers sound as mighty
as ever but there’s a slight shift in their approach. The band is
renowned for their dynamic, instrumental pieces that can lurch in
different directions unexpectedly and, in that sense, little has
changed. But, true to their surprising nature, the new record actually
has vocals by Lyons and special guest, Sandro Perri. So please, check out a new
Fond of Tigers song featuring Sandro called "Vitamin Meathawk."
