Formed almost 20 years ago, the Sea and Cake have been on a prolific run as of late, following up last year’s split 7” with Broken Social Scene and The Moonlight Butterfly LP with Runner, which has a close connection to its predecessor.

Everybody and Car Alarm, I think of them as a pair as well, but it was more intentional this time,” leader Sam Prekop says of this recent one-two punch. “A lot of it had to do with the timing of when they were written and recorded. For me, The Moonlight Butterfly was a full album even though it was only six songs, but that was not the public perception."

“In between the two, I hadn't really stopped working because I did a soundtrack that is also related to both records,” he continues. “I took that as a lead-in to Runner and I feel like it’s all cut from a similar cloth.”

Prekop says this fertile period saw him initially write songs with synthesizers, as opposed to guitars, which is something of a novelty in the Sea and Cake's trajectory. As such, he felt more like experimenting with the band's dreamy, pop rock sound. Canadian fans can see the fruits of this when the Sea and Cake’s tour brings them to Toronto on Oct. 18, Montreal on Oct. 19 and Vancouver on Nov. 1.

Beyond that, Prekop assures fans he’s got more music on the horizon, including a potential song-based duo guitar record with his Sea and Cake bandmate Archer Prewitt. At the same time, Prekop isn’t making plans too far in advance.

“I don’t have time to not produce,” he says of his work ethic right now. “Occasionally it’d be nice to not do it for a little while, but I’m happiest when I’m working and I feel really lucky to have this output for this energy I have to keep making records. Some of the breaks have maybe hindered our career a little bit in terms of people staying aware of us. But we were never careerists and I’m fully aware of the fact that, if I wanna keep doing it, I need a scheduled output.”
