SHIFT on October 16

Welcome to Shift, where Tom Allen takes you on a daily musical journey from the stalwarts of Classical music to the cutting edge of Contemporary tunes. Join us here on CBC music for a round-up of the stories of the day, some videos of music (or maybe just videos interesting to music fans) and a place to speak your voice.

Tuesday October 16th

Haydn's incredible 82nd Symphony was commissioned, and the premiere was led, by an incredible man. They don't make them like the Chevalier de St George anymore. Those who saw him at the premiere recognized him from his many interests. This violinist also fenced with the best in europe, was a marksman, could swim great distances in tough conditions, and was a renowned womanizer. Today's equivalent would be somebody who quarterbacks a Superbowl winning football team, leads the Philharmonic, all while winning the Nobel Prize.

(our on-air broadcast featured this piece being performed by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra)

Doesn't sound like the romantic destination wedding you've been hoping for? That's because we're talking about Jersey.
