On Monday, Oct. 15, jazz singer/songwriter Jill Barber became part of an unexpected rescue mission after a yacht capsized and sent three people overboard. Barber (spouse of CBC Radio 3 host Grant Lawrence) was en route from Vancouver to Australia, touring in support of her newest release, Mischievous Moon, when her Air Canada flight was pulled into the search efforts. Barber’s fellow passengers eventually spotted the missing individuals sitting atop the capsized boat and alerted authorities.
And Barber is just the latest in a lengthy list of musicians rising to the occasion. Here are four other stories of heroic happenstance from artists of every genre.
T.I. saves Scott Stapp
In the Creed singer/songwriter’s autobiography, Sinner’s Creed, Scott Stapp confessed his near-death experience in 2006 when, drugged, drunk and paranoid, he attempted to climb over the balcony of his 16th floor hotel room and lower himself onto the balcony below. Instead, he slipped and fell, smashing his head on a concrete ridge — but not to his death. He lay there calling for help for two hours until finally the balcony door opened and rapper T.I. became Stapp’s unlikely saviour, and got him to the hospital on the down-low with a broken nose, arm and hip.
Country singer Craig Morgan rescues kids from burning house
The country singer/songwriter and host of TV’s Criag Morgan: All Access Outdoors, who has also completed nine tours of Iraq entertaining the troops, added superhero to his resume in 2011 after rescuing two children from a fire in Charlotte, Tenn. Morgan’s previous training as an EMT, army paratrooper and sheriff’s deputy likely bolstered his confidence to run into the house, half engulfed in flames. Inside, he found a two-year-old and a seven-year-old amongst the smoke and snatched them out to safety.
Ryan Gosling saves woman from NYC taxi
Canada’s multi-meme-spawning crush and Everybody’s Boyfriend, Ryan Gosling (actor and musician with Dead Man’s Bones) brought his one-man safety crusade to the Big Apple, preventing British writer Laurie Penny from being hit by a NYC taxi this summer. A few weeks later, he also broke up a street brawl. Swoon.
Morrissey rescues elderly woman
Former Smiths singer and noted vegan was just browsing at the Strand Bookstore in NYC when an elderly woman collapsed beside him. He rushed to help and picked up her stray belongings, while she pulled herself back together and declined any further assistance. But it’s the thought that counts.
