What Happens Next: The Dan Mangan Documentary is airing nationally on CBC TV this Saturday Oct 20 at noon ET / 9am PT. The film chronicles the lead up to Dan Mangan's biggest headlining gig to date, at the storied Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver.

It's no secret that Mangan is indie-everywhere these days, so I coerced filmmaker Brent Hodge (also behind the earlier Said The Whale doc Winning America) to share with you...

Five Things You Don't Know About Dan Mangan ...according to Brent Hodge

1. Dan Mangan is a great cook

During the filming, a lot of the catering was done by Chef Mangan himself. He made a soup that fed the entire cast and crew. I wasn't going to have any but he got offended and made me eat it.

2. Mangan Scorsese

We wanted the doc to have footage of Dan touring when he was a bit younger. We asked Dan if he had any around that fans or family had taken. Little did we know that Mangan Scorsese had hard drives FULL of footage of him on the road and it was really good stuff! We ended up using it in the final cut of the doc.

3. Dan "No Sugar Tonight" Mangan

We went did an interview in a coffee shop where he told me he has cut sugar out of his coffee. Milk was still a must. Personally, I'm a Tim Hortons double double guy so it was hard for me to believe that coffee could be brewed without sweetness.

4. Dan is a superfan of Chad VanGaalen

There was two different scenarios when this became prevalent. When we shot scenes in his car, Chad's Soft Airplane blasting out of the stereo much like a teenage girl would have done... then Dan was hanging out with the student actors at a video shoot and Dan put on VanGaalen's classic album Skelliconnection

5. Public Transporter

The biggest shock to me about Dan was how humble and real the guy was. There was numerous occasions during the shoot when he wouldn't even want us to pick him up. He took the bus to meet us. He would always stop to talk to fans, or strike up a conversation with anyone. It was an honour to see how he respects and deals with his rapidly rising fame first hand. -BH

With Dan's impending documentary release, which will also be streaming here on CBC Music as of Sunday, this brings me to my...
