Wherever you are, today’s Tempo will leave you tasting salt water on your lips and feeling the cool ocean breeze on your face. It’s a trip to Halifax for a concert recorded at the Tall Ships Nova Scotia 2012 Festival.
You’ll hear a performance by the Tall Ships Orchestra, including members of Symphony Nova Scotia and conductor Martin MacDonald, recorded by CBC this past July on the Halifax waterfront. The concert features a special commission for the occasion. CBC asked bassoonist Christopher Palmer to write a piece called the Ships and Flags 2012 Overture that celebrates ships carrying original settlers and immigrants to the shores of Halifax. Then you’ll hear a real orchestral spectacle. Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture left the harbour ringing with canons, church bells and fireworks.
Tall Ships Orchestra and everybody in attendance had a blast on Halifax harbour this past July.
You can hear Tempo every weekday on CBC Radio 2 at 9:00 a.m. (9:30 NT). You can connect on Twitter and Facebook or by emailing tempo@cbc.ca.
