What's sadder than Aidan Knight's new album, Small Reveal?
Well, the news that this afternoon Knight crashed his tour van just passed Strathmore, Alberta, after hitting black ice en route from Calgary to Regina. The same day as his record release. On his birthday.
"There was a tiny incline, but there was a fresh snowfall last night and we hit this slick and our trailer caught it wrong," Knight said, over the phone with CBC Music. "We ended up heading into this snowbank. It was sort of that terrifying moment where there's snow being blasted over both sides of the windows and we weren't sure if we were going to roll or not."
Knight said he's been in three car accidents in his life, and this one shared an eerie similarity with one that happened in Kelowna, also on tour, with a former band.
"I remember time slowing down as we got t-boned in this intersection, and it was the exact same feeling [today]. Which I'm told is adrenaline," Knight laughed.
The bumper of their 1999 Honda Odyssey van sustained most of the damage when the trailer slammed into it, and the band is awaiting word on axle damage while they get snow tires.
"It's a Honda minivan: it's made for safety," he joked. "But now we have to figure out how to make it to Winnipeg. There are a lot of logistics."
Logistics aside, Knight is keeping his spirits up. After all, his record came out today, it's his birthday, and all seven people in the van are safe.
"We're all shaken, but unstirred."
Update: Aidan and his band have cancelled their Winnipeg show as well as last night in Regina and send their apologies. The Zolas however, will still be performing tonight at the Park Theatre, with special guest Leif Vollebekk and there will be copies of Aidan Knight’s new album for sale at the show.
