When it comes to crafting a song that will leave a lasting impression, what’s being said is often as important as what sounds the instruments are making. That’s why the Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award for songwriter of the year spans all genres, honouring the best in everything from rock to country.

Here’s a rundown of who may take home the prize when the APCMAs are handed out Nov. 1 and 2 in Winnipeg.

Bruthers of Different Muthers
They were nominated for a Juno and won best rock CD last year for Speakers of Tomorrow, and now Jesse Green, Leroy Constant, Michel Bruyere and Donovan Mojopin are back with their hard-hitting brand of rock infused with traditional elements of Aboriginal music.

Listen for the traditionally inspired vocals on the title track, "Speakers of Tomorrow."

Donny Parenteau
This multiple award-winning artist is known for his successful solo career, as well as playing fiddle, guitar and mandolin for country music’s Neal McCoy.

This is "My Girl."

Holly McNarland
Ever since her 1995 debut, Sour Pie, this Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter has been dazzling listeners with her deft lyrics and sharp observations. On her latest album, Run Body Run, McNarland takes the opportunity to flex her country music muscle.

This is a stripped-down version of “Run Body Run” by an equally stripped down (though still clothed) McNarland.

Indian City
Vince Fontaine was best known for his work with the award-winning Eagle and Hawk, but with his new supergroup of Aboriginal artists, he’s making a strong case for the power of collaboration.

This is “Stand” by Indian City.

Murray Porter
For 30 years, Porter has been honing his craft, mixing country and the blues to tell the Aboriginal side of history. It couldn’t be more fitting that his latest album is called Songs Lived & Life Played.

This is the 2012 Juno winner's song “Rez Blues.”

Tracy Bone
“No longer ashamed to be me,” Bone sings on “Woman of Red,” an anthem about being proud of your heritage, just one of the many poignant moments on her nominated album of the same name.

This is Bone's performance of "Lonely With You" on the show Arbor Live.
