I basically just woke up after sleeping at 5:00 AM and am listening to Fred Squire's new album, March 12, which he gifted to me on Thursday. I need its murky grit right now, as it suits the blue fog I'm in.

Had a full night at Pop Montreal, dragging Mike Feuerstack of Snailhouse/Bell Orchestre around town after spotting him at the Deerhoof/Danielson show, which still feels like one of the best things I've ever seen. Deerhoof (iPhone pictured above) are so joyful and pulverizing, and they're playing a secret show at 2 AM tonight at Little Burgundy POP Loft (Espace Réunion)! I may go back again! After that, Mike and I biked over to Casa del Popolo (which has been renovated since I was last there and now has two rooms) to check out the new Unicorns/Clues/Islands-related project, the Hidden Words. Alden Penner has become a devout follower of the Baha'i faith and, while I wasn't sure what to make of his proselytizing, the music was earnest and clever. Alden's so talented, I'd follow him (almost) anywhere. Mike said good night and I headed to Espace Réunion to try and at least catch a bit of Les Savy Fav. Turns out the show was running super late and I was also able to see a short set by much-buzzed about local artist, Pat Jordache (ex-Islands). It was a cool, sophisticated dance-pop spectacle.I recall being surprised by the grunt of it all; a very mannish display somehow. Of course, the man scale then went through the roof for Les Savy Fav, whose anthemic punk gets in your face, thanks to burly, half-nude front-man Tim Harrington's antics. At one point, he'd lassoed the mic cord through pipes running across the ceiling and was swinging around the stage. It was theatrical and intense.

So that was last night. I gotta split so I can go interview people at the Pop BBQ, presented by Mint Records, Out of this Spark, Fuzzy Logic Recs, and Do Right!, which is happening right now! As for tonight, I plan to make it to the Luyas' ambitious Everything Outta Sight project, Mary Margaret O'Hara, and the Out of this Spark and Wavelength showcases at least. Oh, and Deerhoof again?

Are you at Pop Montreal? Come find Vish.
