New music from Ghislain Poirier, b.k.a Poirier, is always exciting, but yesterday we got word of something unexpected from the Montreal producer/DJ: brand new, well, everything. According to XLR8R, Poirier's producing a completely new project under a new alias, Boundary. This explains all those recent Instagrams snapped near the U.S./Mexico border...
Says XLR8R: "His latest project apparently started as a way for him to explore new sounds and styles that don't fit the Poirier aesthetic."
The first Boundary release, "Free Violence," a non-album track, most definitely doesn't fall into Poirier's usual, or at least recent, dancehall/soca/global bass-catchall. In fact, the shuddering meter conjures damp, bone-chilling British climes rather than a humid, tropical dancefloor. And from the new Twitter account: "Dark cinematic music from the cold north, Boundary explores hard hitting minimalistic soundscapes and channel the spirit of classic IDM, ambient and techno."
In reality, Poirier's never been one to sit still so the switch-up isn't that unexpected. Throughout his career, he's run through a variety of electronic styles, from techno to instrumental hip-hop, soundtrack-y ambient, to dancehall. And while "Free Violence" suggests where Boundary is going, we're looking forward to a spring 2013 LP release to hear this new statement in full.
