This weekend marks the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup. Our great Canadian battle of titans in tights; men competing over pigskin & an end zone. Sounds like fun to me! I spent most of Friday (yesterday) here in the Toronto offices of CBC over-hearing various sound check performances (whether I wanted to or not). The Grey Cup Fest is just along Front Street (right outside my window), therefore I could hear every syllable and every cymbal crashing through the windows. It was LOUD, man!
Among others, I heard Platinum Blonde rehearse their 80s anthems and Classified do vocal warm-ups, which was preceded by a performance from the Argos marching band, the Argonotes. And all this was constantly surrounded by the waft of tonnes of ribs being prepped for Canada’s Largest Ribfest.
Whether or not the CFL is your thing, it’s definitely an interesting Canadian experience. Toronto is currently invaded by thousands of proud face-painted Canadians representing their various Provinces and taking part in a handful of traditional Grey Cup activities.
It’s also great to see Canadian music as the soundtrack to the entire weekend. There seems to be Rock & Roll nostalgia everywhere I turn. In today’s show I’ll play some of Canada’s finest and then some. Artists such as Hey Rosetta, Sam Roberts, Julie Doiron, Sloan and more!
