Original vs. adaptation

As a fan of the Golden Girls, occasionally friends will share all things related to the show with me on Facebook (trust me, there are a lot of memes.)

Recently a friend passed on the intro to the Dutch version of the show

It was funny to think of those characters living on in a new, completely different country, but then again, that happens all the time. This got me thinking, while looking for some examples (besides the obvious British Office and the American take) I stumbled on this list by Paste Magazine showcasing 10 American Adaptations of British TV Shows.

Did you know that Sanford and Son was based on a 1960’s British show called Steptoe and Son? Three's Company and All in the Family were also derived from British shows. Who knew? (Maybe you did.)

If you’re a big fan of a series or film, do you often watch its international adaptations?

Is the original always better?
When have you preferred the remake?

Let the arguments begin!

In the case of the movie Let the Right One In, I must say I prefer the Swedish original.
