[Graham is guest hosting for Grant Lawrence today and tomorrow]

I recently started playing Word With Friends, the phone version of Scrabble. This is a big step for me - I'd previously sworn off all forms of crossword games, out of concern for my health. See, I like to think of myself as a pretty smart dude. Which makes it ALL THE MORE INFURIATING when I can't seem to think up one single measly word. Fortunately, I've found a solution.

These days, music is all over the map. People are using technology to create heretofore unimaginable sounds, and the definition of the word music is being stretched to new and exciting places. All of this means that music journalists have to be on top of their game. No more busting out old guard words like "groove" or "funky". Now it's a linguistic arms race to find just the right adjective to describe a sound that simply didn't exist a year ago.

Toronto's Doldrums seems to be on the forefront of this trend, so let's increase our word power together with some help from our friendly local music writers!

Ax-i-o-mat-ic [adj.]

1. pertaining to or of the nature of an axiom; self evident; obvious
2. aphoristic

"...Woodhead starts chanting a refrain that kids have relied upon for centuries, and which is axiomatic for Evil as a whole..."
-Pitchfork

A-que-ous [adj.]

1. of, like, or containing water; watery; an aqueous solution
2. (of rocks or sediments) formed of matter deposited in or by water.

"The 8-bit-tinged, aqueous swirl of "Holographic Sandcastles..."
-Exclaim

Rhi-zo-mat-ic [adj.]

1. of, or relating to, a rhizome

"The record spreads like an electronic virus, infectious and rhizomatic in its construction."
-Torontoist

What are your favourite musical adjectives? And hey, any hot tips on words I can use to beat my friends at Scrabble?
