What were you doing in 2003? What did your life look like?
In 2003, the world was captivated by the conclusion to the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Scientists, probably wearing white lab coats and maybe even nifty goggles, had just sequenced 99.99% of the human genome, which is extremely important for reasons I am entirely too thick headed to understand, let alone explain. Apple's latest iPod music player had a weird row of buttons above the scroll wheel. It was a different time...
In musical news, Ruben Studdard stunned a nation (and infuriated my parents) by defeating Clay Aiken in a hard fought American Idol finale, Ozzy Osbourne had that ATV accident I'd forgotten about until right now (seriously, the man is invincible), and Leonard Cohen received Canada's highest honour, becoming a Companion of the Order of Canada.
More relevantly to the show today, the Arts & Crafts record label was formed, and Great Lake Swimmers released their self titled debut album. Ten years later, it's hard to imagine a Canadian music scene without them, and it wouldn't be a stretch to say that the past decade has been one of the most important periods in Canadian musical history.
So, think back to 2003 - what do you miss? What are you glad has changed? And seriously, how lame were those iPod buttons?
