Stompin' Tom Connors died Wednesday at age 77 from "natural causes," according to a spokesman for the artist. No musician did more to bring Canada to the world through song, and the country he sang about is paying tribute to the great Canadian. But his success wasn't an easy one.
In the radio documentary The Stompin' Tom Connors Hour, which originally aired on Inside the Music, Connors tells his own story in words and music. He talks about his early days hitchhiking with his mother before winding up in an orphanage and, eventually, Skinner's Pond where he was raised by an adoptive family. Listen as he describes the long, strange journey from his tough childhood to becoming a national icon.
