Stompin' Tom Connors died Wednesday at age 77 from natural causes, according to a spokesman for the artist. No musician did more to bring Canada to the world through song, and the country he sang about is paying tribute to the great Canadian. But his success wasn't an easy one.
This week's Inside the Music celebrates the life of Stompin' Tom with a re-broadcast of a fascinating documentary about the man from Skinners Pond, P.E.I. The Stompin' Tom Connors Hour is a trip through time — 50 years of songs and interviews given by the great man himself. He talks about his early days hitchhiking with his mother before winding up in an orphanage and, eventually, Skinners Pond, where he was raised by an adoptive family.
The Stompin' Tom Connors HourListen as Connors describes the long, strange journey from his tough childhood to becoming a national icon.
Listen to Inside the Music on CBC Radio 2 Sunday, March 10 at 3 p.m. (3:30 NT) and Radio One at 9 p.m.(9:30 NT).
