Last month we read an oral history about Danko Jones, featuring quotes and testimonials from some amazing and influential musicians. Among them was Ian F. Svenonius, lead vocalist for the Nation of Ulysses, the Make-Up (who are re-forming for Coachella next month) and Chain and the Gang. Svenonius also helms (or helmed?) one of my favourite interview shows, Soft Focus.
All this to say that he’s written our book of the month for March: Supernatural Strategies for Making a Rock ‘n’ Roll Group. Here’s how publisher Akashic Books describes it:
“Ian Svenonius’s experience as an iconic underground rock musician – playing in such highly influential and revolutionary outfits as the Make-Up and the Nation of Ulysses– gives him special insight on techniques for not only starting but also surviving a rock ‘n’ roll group. Therefore, he’s written an instructional guide, which doubles as a warning device, a philosophical text, an exercise in terror, an aerobics manual and a coloring book.
“This volume features essays on everything the would-be star should know to get started, such as Sex, Drugs, Sound, Group Photo, The Van and Manufacturing Nostalgia. The book also has black-and-white illustrations. Supernatural Strategies will serve as an indispensable guide for a new generation just aching to boogie.”
Wow, there you go. Are you ready to learn and have fun? I hope so.
I have five copies of March's book to offer to the first people (not employed by the CBC) who can answer skill-testing questions below. "But where are the questions," you ask? They’ll be appearing throughout the day today. I just have to think of them.
If I tell you that you had a winning post, please send your name (real and blog), mailing address and winning answer/question to rock@cbc.ca with “Aching to boogie” in the subject line.
Check out the trailer for this book. You might have to get someone to watch it for you:
