A new song has leaked from the upcoming Snoop Lion album, Reincarnated, which sees the rapper-turned-reggae singer teaming up with Drake to contemplate gun violence. You can listen to "No Guns Allowed" below.
“When the bodies hit the ground, there’s nothing left to say,” sings Snoop on the Major Lazer and Ariel Rechtshaid-produced electro-reggae track.
Although it would seem that Drake does have something to say when it comes to the Danzig Street shooting in Toronto last summer, the worst mass shooting in the city’s history that left 23 wounded and two dead: 14-year-old Shyanne Charles and 23-year-old Joshua Yasay.
“News from back home, just when it hurts to be gone, two more names to be carved out of stone,” Drake raps before going into a diatribe against gun violence and the judicial system.
“Bullets do not choose a victim, it’s the shooter that picks ‘em. They just can’t wait to get you into the system, the district attorney could use a conviction.”
The verse is inspired and heartfelt, and it’s a nice contrast to a more recent verse we heard from Drake.
As NOW reports, press agents specifically asked them to avoid asking the rapper about the Danzig shooting when they profiled him last summer, so it’s particularly touching to see him close by dedicating the song to the two victims.
“Life is so heavy with that on your soul, dedicate this to Shyanne and Josh. Pour something out for the lives that they stole, 416,” he raps.
Reincarnated will be released April 23.
