If this week's new videos are any indication, Canadian musicians are getting back to basics, what with some of the clips going retro, some rooting themselves in Canada, and some looking lovingly homemade. From toe-tappers to hip-hoppers, here they are:
The Bicycles, "Nap Trap"
They say it’s important to get plenty of sleep – but who knew that if you stay up too late working on a band poster, you might just get sucked into a bizarre dream universe. At least that’s what happens to the Bicycles' drummer Dana Snell, along to the sound of band’s latest sweet toe-tapping tune.
Rich Kidd, "Skye"
Firmly set in Toronto, this latest video by Toronto rapper Rich Kidd – whose mixtape In My Opinion is due out in April – features Kidd rhyming in front of the CN Tower and looking out over the city skyline, as well as at parties where at least one woman learns a tough lesson in alcohol consumption.
JD Era, "Canada Eh"
Rapper JD Era also sticks close to home with his video for “Canada Eh” which has him rhyming about everything from Canada geese to snow days as he hangs out by a ski hill and raps in front of Toronto’s Air Canada Centre wearing a Canada jersey. The clip also features stunning shots of Canadian locales from mountain peaks to Parliament Hill.
Little Men, "Think Again"
Guelph folkie Mary Cassidy sits in with her brother Zach’s band, Little Men, in a cozy studio to perform "Think Again," a groove-heavy, harmony-rich tune – that is, after a little bit of chitter chat and warm up.
Ghostkeeper, "Luella"
There’ a decidedly retro home movie feel to this new clip by Calgary band Ghostkeeper, which begins with a curtain fluttering beside a kitchen table – but the visuals get weirder as the music morphs from catchy pop to dense guitar distortion and back again.
Alright Alright, "Weekend"
Toronto’s Alright Alright also go retro for their latest, "Weekend", which features vintage footage of roller coasters and old-time fairs, mixed with baseball games and stadium mishaps. A word to the wise: if the baseball is heading your way, don’t reach too far over the railing to try and catch it.
