Alain Trudel has been called the "Jascha Heifetz of the trombone." According to the Parisian music review Le Monde de la Musique, Trudel's sound on the trombone is as polished and virtuosic as that of the legendary violinist.
Trudel was still a teenager when the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal invited him to play in their brass section. As he watched Charles Dutoit lead the orchestra in rehearsals, Trudel developed an interest in conducting. For over two decades now, he has been doing both on five continents, as guest conductor and soloist with orchestras around the world.
At home in Canada, Trudel is currently principal conductor for Orchestra London and Orchestre Symphonique de Laval. He was at the helm of the CBC Radio Orchestra for two years, and he's conducted productions for Opera de Montreal and Opera de Quebec. Trudel takes special interest in young musicians and heads the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. Their recording of Mahler and Stravinsky won a Juno in 2010, and in May 2013, the NYO will be touring India and working with the national youth orchestra there.
Alain Trudel's musical interests range from Mozart through jazz to new music. As host of This Is My Music he reveals that his mother was a pop singer in Quebec during the 60s and 70s. Alain Trudel hosts This Is My Music in an encore presentation on Saturday, March 30 on CBC Radio 2, 10:05 a.m. to noon in most of the country, 11:05 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Atlantic Canada.
