Friday April 5th 2013
Today on SHIFT you'll be walking through the world of time signatures in music. It will be a discussion of the importance of time signatures, from the basics of 2/4 time to the more complex 11/8. We'll even start with music that pre-dates time signatures on paper. Take a look at the sheet music for Revecy Venir du Printans.
Starting with a homely feeling 2/4:
(our on-air broadcast featured this piece being performed by James Anagnoson and Leslie Kinton)
to 9/8 with Wagner's classic Ride of the Valkyries:
(our on-air broadcast featured this piece being performed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra)
and to the truly complex 11/8:
(our on-air performance featured this piece being performed by I Musici De Montreal)
Join in for all of the good times (pun intended), and you can listen to the entire broadcast again at the top of this blog.
CBC Music is looking for the best new act in Canadian music through a contest we're calling Searchlight. Already we're down to the best 4 upcoming bands in the country, as voted on by you. Help us give the right prize to the right people! Final Four voting ends this Sunday, and today we'll be playing music from Hamilton's Poor Angus.
