You might not think of jazz when you think "hair band." That's more of a rock 'n' roll thing. But that doesn't mean jazz doesn't have epic hair. On the contrary: jazz has really epic hair and, in at least one, case epic baldness. If there's one thing you can say about jazz hair, like the music itself, it's a big commitment.
Below, some of the most amazing hair in jazz.
1. Sonny Rollins.
Sonny Rollins is known as a towering figure in jazz; some may even say he's a colossus. His puffy white hair surrounds his head like a single, perfect cloud hugs the peak of a mountain. If a cloud wore sunglasses, you could call is a Cumulous Sonny Rollins and it would rain saxophone.
2. Esperanza Spalding.
She is the "it" girl in jazz today. Esperanza Spalding earned a Grammy Award over Justin Bieber in 2011, causing a worldwide Bieber blowout from his fans. The fact is, though, that Spalding is immensely talented and her glorious locks sit like a crown on her head, as the new queen of jazz.
3. Cindy Blackman Santana.
The drum world looks at Cindy Blackman Santana as a wunderkind. She's earned her place at the top of the heap partially because of a gig she used to have playing drums for Lenny Kravitz. She's a phenomenal drummer, and as she wails on her kit her wild 'do flops to and fro. One commenter on YouTube made the point that her hair looks like a Boston fern.
4. Dee Dee Bridgewater.
Dee Dee Bridgewater is the opposite of Spalding and Blackman Santana. Her look is sleek — as in bald — and she works it like she invented baldness. There's not much information about why Dee Dee Bridgewater is bald. It's just her look, and when you find a look that people admire you for and, better yet, remember you by, you keep it.
5. Nina Simone.
The style of Nina Simone's hair in the video below is more a piece of art than it is a practical hairdo. Rings, wraps and braids come together for an up-do that is unmatched. Her earrings only add weight, literally, to the striking look. No sudden movements were allowed in the making of this video.
