Wrath of Khanna's Album of the Week: The Great Depression by Common Grackle

My Album of the Week is The Great Depression by the inventively bizzaro duo known as Common Grackle. A union of prolific, Saskatoon-based hip-hop artist Factor and Guelph's delightfully demented (or is it dementedly delightful?) Gregory Pepper, Common Grackle's The Great Depression is essentially a super strange, dark pop record full of humourous lyrics dipped in acid. Not the drug, but actual psyche-scalding acid. Actually, scratch that (acid?); the imagery is heady enough to suggest it could've be exposed to many different kinds of acid. With star guest turns by the legendary Kool Keith and diverse artist Ceschi, The Great Depression flirts with underground hip-hop but it's really an uncompromising carnival of brilliant sounds that will please (and likely disturb) pop connoisseurs of any stripe.

Are you a fan of Common Grackle? Any plans to pick up their new record?

I have five CD copies of The Great Depression to give away to the first people on the blog to respond with correct answers to questions I'll ask on the air throughout today's show. If this ends up being you (once!), please e-mail vish_khanna [at] cbcradio3.com with "The Grackle!" in the subject line, and your blog moniker and shipping address in your message.

Old or new, Canadian or otherwise, what is YOUR album of the week?
