I don’t think it’s an understatement to call Glee a cultural phenomenon. What begin a couple of years ago as just a television show about a glee club in an Ohio high school, it’s now has a cult following eager to eat up any and all songs overhauled Glee style.
As the show has evolved, it’s gone from teen drama to big-musical spectacle. All the A list actors want to guest star and song choices have gone from the obscure to the most current.
But given that it’s a show set in a high school, the drama isn’t just on screen. This week a feud erupted when Kings of Leon got into a very public feud with show creator Ryan Murphy over their refusal to let their song be used on the show. But this isn’t the first refusal. Back in the summer of 2010, Bryan Adams turned down the request to use his song “Heaven.”
I’m not sure it’s every artist’s dream to have their song reinterpreted by a Glee Club, even if it is by professionals. And just maybe they aren’t that jazzed by seeing it come out on a best-selling CD for middle American fans of show tunes.
And that brings me to today’s question:
HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN A SONG YOU LIKE IS GLEE-ED?
DO BANDS LOSE CREDIBILITY?
ARE YOU GLEEFUL ABOUT GLEE?
Full disclosure, I’m a fan. But I can take your criticism…but I may not talk to you in the hall tomorrow.
