Lindi Ortega sounds like maybe the love child of a Nordic - Spanish couple.
Try Irish-Mexican.
This of course makes her music fall somewhere between Celtic and Marriachi: Country! She's as country as the best of them, think as big as Dolly Parton, for example. It's not a hyperbolic comparison to Lindi. (Minus a few physical discrepencies.)
I found Ms. Ortega here on CBC Radio 3 a few years ago when her four-song Drifter EP came out. Your Track of the Day, "Dying of Another Broken Heart" became a staple for all my mix tapes and joined my playlist called "Songs I Love to Sing Along To."
That 2008 EP had her opening up for Kevin Costner's band The Modern West on their tour and she was snapped up as a backup singer for Brandon Flowers of The Killers.
Lindi finally came out with her first full recording this year and I'm happy to report that Dying is on it. It's the song that hooked me with its simple finger-picking backdrop to her stained voice and plaintive sentiment. It also has a xylophone solo that doesn't feel indie-cute like all the common glockenspiels out there.
But don't stop here, all of Little Red Boots is fantastic. Lindi Ortega with "Dying of Another Broken Heart."
