For the next couple of days I'll be reporting from the Banff Centre Indie Band Residency, a two week retreat for up and coming musicians sponsored in part by CBC Radio 3. This year the bands in residence are: Montreal's Doldrums, Vancouver's Abramson Singers, and Winnipeg's Mise En Scene (pictured above).
While here each band has the opportunity to record new material with experienced producers and from what I've been told, the groups this year have been recording so much that each will leave with an EP worth of new material.
Over the next couple of days I'm going to try and share with you some of this new music.
First up - Mise En Scene with 'Perfect Killers'. When I met these girls they were heading into Calgary to check out The Smith Westerns and after hearing this track I am not surprised. 'Perfect Killers' evokes the minimal yet guitar heavy sounds of The Smith Westerns, Best Coast, and The Pack A.D. The track was produced by Howard Billerman (Arcade Fire) and has great chorus. Listen for the organ towards the end of the track it's... killer.
To cap off the residency the Banff Centre is staging a gig with all of the bands in residence and Chad VanGaalen on Oct. 1 at the Margaret Greenwodd Theatre at 7:30pm MT. The gig will also be broadcast at banffcentre.ca/live
