Last week, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died at age 56. I was quite saddened by this. The man who created the gadgets that changed the way I live, the way I experience music, was gone. As I read obits, and read comments/ sighs of relief over posts like 'Steve Jobs’s secret legacy: Dying Apple boss left plans for four years of new products' I started to think, when was the last time there was a public outcry of mourning over a CEO?
Gawker’s response involved this post: "If you like Apple products, fine. They are products. They do not have souls. They are not heroes, and neither is their creator, no matter how skilled he may have been." Granted the author admit to never owning an Apple product.
A friend passed on this BBC doc on The Secrets of Superbrands, which brought up a few questions: What is it about Apple that makes people so emotional? Apple seems to inspire feelings in its users which other technology brands just can’t reach.
At one point, an MRI showed that Apple products triggered the same parts of an Apple fan’s brain that religious imagery triggers in a person of faith. The brand in many ways has become a religion of sorts.
