Writers' Strike and Meaningful Pop Music

I’m a big fan of catchy pop songs. My current fave is one from Flo Rida, this is the chorus: “Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, sometimes I get a good feeling, yeah I get a feeling that I never never never never had before, no no I get a good feeling…”

Now you may call this mindless and lowest common denominator, and I’m okay with that. I like to spend at least a few minutes of my day not over-thinking, heck – thinking. And I’m glad that someone sat down and put this song together for my listening pleasure.

But not everyone sees pop music the same way. Some bands take the catchy melody and infectious hooks and lyrically infuse it with thoughts on the dreary realities of daily life.

Case in point: Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Writers Strike. In their head-bopping single “Stay Down” the chorus goes “Overeducated, underwhelmed and underpaid”. I find myself singing along and then catching myself, wait - this is sad. And then I ask myself: Is this even a pop song?

I suppose no one said pop couldn’t be relevant, but should it be?The Writer’s Strike joins me today on the show and they’ve got a couple of giveaways, too. So it’s time to do some Friday thinking:

DOES POP MUSIC HAVE TO BE SILLY SONGS ABOUT PARTYING AND LOVE?
DO YOU LIKE A MEANGINGFUL POP SONG THAT SPEAKS TO YOU?

I’ll get to how you can win a prize today. And yes it will require thinking of more than a Teenage Dream.
