Bach's Cello Suites are great. So great, that other instrumentalists have decided to have a go at them. For this week's quiz, we ask you to identify some alt cello suite.
So you'll hear four different instruments playing the Bach suites below. You don't need to name the suite, just name the instrument (it's not the cello!) Each excerpt is separated by a bike bell.
Again, just name the four instruments heard and you could win. Send your answers to inconcert@cbc.ca
This week I'm giving away the 5th DVD in the Glenn Gould on Television set from CBC Records. This one contains conversations between Glenn Gould and the BBC's Hemphery Burton.
As well, I have a brand new ATMA recording of Bach's St. John Passion. It features Les Voix Baroques and the Arion Orchestra conducted by Alexander Weimann.
And keeping with the Bach theme, I have the Bach set from the Naxos Life and Works series. This is a 4 CD set that explores Bach's life and music.
Now last week, I asked you to name three high sounding instruments that have an orchestral solo. You heard the triangle (from the Liszt Piano Concerto no. 1), the piccolo from Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony and the celeste from the theme from Harry Potter by John Williams.
Congrats to the three winners, Nathan Musoke of Lower Sackville, NS; Art Davis of Saskatoon, SK; and Tom Fletcher of Ottawa, ON.
Now onto the Hot Tickets for the week of February 6.
Tafelmusik in Toronto has put together as magical journey to the meeting places of baroque art and music – five European homes where exquisite works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Marais were played against a backdrop of paintings by Vermeer, Canaletto, and Watteau. That starts this Wednesday in Toronto and runs to Saturday.
At the CBC in Vancouver, we have a free concert this Thursday presented by Music in the Morning. It features the London Haydn Quartet and violist Steven Dann. These are really fun and compact concert experiences. You show up around 5, have an aperitif in the lovely Studio One lobby and are out the door, sans intermission in time for dinner. The concert is free but you should book a spot to get in.
And finally, a chance to hear Clara Schumann's rarely performed piano concerto. Montreal-born pianist Lucille Chung plays it with Orchestra London along with the wonderful Brahms Symphony no. 4. That's this coming Saturday (Feb. 11) at 8 PM in London, ON.
