Benjamin Butterfield reveals that he didn't plan to become a singer when he hosts This Is My Music on Saturday. He grew up in Victoria, where he says he simply "fell into music," first as a choirboy and then through a mentor, Michael Gormley. Gormley was conductor of the Vienna Choirboys before his arrival in Victoria.

Benjamin Butterfield's operatic roles range from Handel to Britten. He's appeared on the great stages of world: Carnegie Hall in New York, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Royal Albert Hall in London and the Palace of Versailles. He's sought out for his performance of Bach. Less conventionally, Butterfield is drawn to the songs of Randy Newman which he often includes in his recitals. He's married to the Dutch soprano Anne Grimm, and together they will premiere a song cycle by his brother, Christopher Butterfield in late May.

Benjamin Butterfield heads the Voice Department at the University of Victoria. He hosts This Is My Music on Saturday April 21 on CBC Radio 2, 10:05 a.m. to noon ET, 11:05 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. AT.
