Over the past several months, the previously unknown Aussie singer-songwriter, also known as Wally De Backer, and his hit song "Somebody That I Used To Know" have become ubiquitous. The song has been covered over and over, and the past couple of weeks has seen the 31-year old on Saturday Night Live, and his song covered on Fox's weekly musical, Glee (even though De Backer was vocal about his dislike of their take on his song).
All of it has coalesced into the song topping the Billboard charts.
In an interview with Billboard last week, Gotye described the genesis of the song, "Seville," and pointed out how he lifted it (with credit) from Brazilian jazz guitarist Luis Bonfá.
"That Luiz Bonfá sample directly prompted the first line of lyrics. The back-and-forth left me thinking about these different breakups and different relationships over the years, and the lyrics flowed from there."
