The In Concert quiz crosses the Pyrenees from Spain to France this week, retracing the footsteps of Belle and Sebastian. (Not this Belle and Sebastian - this one.)
France is our destination in honour of the whirling, mesmerizing composition La Valse, by composer Maurice Ravel, which you can hear if you tune in to In Concert Sunday afternoon in a performance by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under maestro Bramwell Tovey.
While it was tempting to select "Nice Work if You Can Get It" as a musical clue (to elicit the answer "Nice"), I decided to play fair this week and choose clues that leave no doubt that they are referring to places in their titles.
As with previous editions of our travel-themed quiz, the challenge is straightforward, although not necessarily simple. I've selected three musical examples. The title of each contains the name of a place in France. See how many you Cannes get! After all, you have nothing Toulouse.
PLAYYour challenge is to identify the French destinations named in the titles of three musical examples (separated by the sound of a bell).
Don't answer here on the blog. Email your answers to inconcert@cbc.ca. Three correct entrants will win a recently released classical CD.
Last week's quiz took us to Spain. The correct answers were Asturias, from the composition of that name by Isaac Albéniz; Seville, from the overture to Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville), by Gioachino Rossini; and Bilbao, from "The Bilbao Song" by Kurt Weill.
The winners are Isabelle Tanguay of Montreal; Wendy Cladman of Dorchester, ON; Thomas Graham of Saint John, NB; and Stefano Degano of Montreal.
