Mundo Montreal: Zal Sissokho and friends

Every year since 2008, the Mundo Montreal concert series, produced by CBC Montreal, brings together various artists from Quebec’s world music scene for a special collaborative event. In a spirit of openness and exploration, the artists involved blend their music to create something unique.

The latest Mundo Montreal event featured Senegalese singer and kora player Zal Sissokho and his band Buntalo. Sissokho is a generous musician and a sought after collaborator. For this Mundo Montreal event, he invited three special guests to play on his songs: Doba, Cécile Doo-Kingué and Michael Jerome Browne. The collaborating artists’ own music was also transformed by the sounds of Sissokho’s kora playing, and his band.

On March 7, 2012, they all performed in front of a sold-out crowd at Montreal’s Cabaret Lion d’Or. CBC recorded this evening of exceptional musical collaborations, where African music met blues, folk and soul. Check out the Concerts on Demand link below.

Born in Senegal and now living in Montreal for over 15 years, Sissokho, a talented singer and kora player, comes from a family of musicians. Since his arrival in Montreal, Sissokho has played with various artists, including Corneille, Monica Freire and Lilison. He then went on to perform with Cirque du Soleil. Sissokho’s music is also heard on the soundtrack for the film Un dimanche à Kigali. For many years now, he has been concentrating on his solo career and he released his second album, Le Partage, in January 2012.

Watch him perform the song “Pourquoi.”

Formerly of the very successful world music duo DobaCaracol, Doba has launched a solo album, mostly in English, where she stirs together different influences of soul, R&B, folk and world music. This is Doba’s “Grey Lady.”

Cécile Doo-Kingué is an amazing guitarist who blends blues, soul and afro-folk to create her unique sound. Here she is performing her song “Lettre à personne.”

Multi-instrumentalist Michael Jerome Browne is a talented songwriter and singer who is very knowledgeable in American roots music, and who plays in various styles. Watch him perform on his gourd banjo, with Sissokho on kora and Mohammed N’Diaye on djembe, in one of his compositions entitled “Sing Low.”
