This week, an encore presentation of This Is My Music.
Pianist Jamie Parker is a founding member of the Gryphon Trio, one of the world's foremost piano trios. Its recording of Beethoven piano trios was named the 2011 Juno classical recording of the year. In addition to playing the rich repertoire of the past, the Gryphon Trio has initiated some 50 projects with composers, actors, choreographers and other musicians, some of them in folk and jazz genres. Constantinople, the ground-breaking multi-media production with composer Christos Hatzis, is an epic work that the trio has presented with great success in North America and Europe.
Jamie Parker grew up in Vancouver where the Parker family business consisted of playing piano and teaching music. His mother, aunt and uncle were piano teachers. Brother Jon Kimura Parker and cousin Ian Parker became renowned pianists who teach. Likewise Jamie Parker has a thriving chamber and solo career, and also he teaches at the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto.
While his passion for music is obvious, Jamie Parker has a down-to-earth sense of humour. His favourite music includes Sterling Holloway's telling of Sergei Prokofiev's children's classic, Peter and the Wolf. Jamie Parker hosts This Is My Music on Saturday July 21 on CBC Radio 2, 10:05 a.m. to noon ET, 11:05 A.m. to 1:00 p.m. AT.
