Welcome to Shift, where Tom Allen takes you on a daily musical journey from the stalwarts of Classical music to the cutting edge of Contemporary tunes. Join us here on CBC music for a round-up of the stories of the day, some videos of music (or maybe just videos interesting to music fans) and a place to speak your voice.
Friday August 17th
Today, we honour a historic Canadian moment. It was on August 16th, 1812, that General Brock and Shawnee chief Tecumseh managed to pull off the Capture of Detroit. That means that 200 years ago today, they celebrated. And in their name, we offer a cheers.
There's been lots of talk about animals and music. You've shared with us the music your dog likes, and researchers have been testing the impact of classical music on gorillas. But what about insects? Or even arachnids? Apparently even spiders move to the music of a mandolin. Makes those creepy critters slightly more likeable.
And on a note of things that scare you, here's a piece of information about Sharks that might help. Stanford University researchers are working on a surfing robot that tracks Great White Sharks. If these experts can do the job, it looks like you'll never have to fear jaws again. Hopefully the surfer doesn't get distracted by any gnarly waves or beach babes.
And here is a lesson on how to get your stolen bike back. It sure is tough trying to hold on to a bike these days! We can only hope all bike thieves are dumb enough to sell the bike on Craigslist.
