This Sunday on Choral Concert it's all about the the unique sound of American choral music.

It’s a sound that could be described as settled, but not content. It’s distinct and beautiful, but there is an edge to that glorious beauty that reflects a nation still pushing forward. It's a sound that seems to stay in one place, but somehow is still filled with longing.

Philip Glass, Samuel Barber, Morten Lauridsen, and Arron Copeland have all made their own contribution to the American choral sound. But it is Eric Whitacre who has established himself as the choral superstar.

If anything embodies the distinct quality of the American choral sound it is this: Eric Whitacre conducting his own work, Sleep.

On Choral Concert this week, you will hear Eric Whitacre and a whole lot more, as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the Choir of New College Oxford, the Vancouver Chamber Choir, the Elora Festival Singers and the Los Angeles Master Chorale all spin out the distinct American sound in a series of exquisite performances.

Choral Concert, the all-American edition, with host Peter Togni. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m., (9:30 - 11:30 NT) on CBC Radio 2.
