On top of last week’s hubbub about the May 7 release of TakesTime, his first pop LP in 10 years, Jim Guthrie has also put out the CORPOREAL EP, consisting of music written for Playstation’s Sound Shapes music remix game. Sound Shapes also boasts contributions from Beck, Deadmau5 and I am Robot and Proud.
“Releasing the music for CORPOREAL was sort of a catch-22 thing because these mixes are merely suggested servings of what you, the player, could do yourself if you owned the game which they were composed for,” Guthrie explains, referring to Sound Shapes. “That's the brilliance of this project. It's both a game and an instrument but you have to play it to unlock the instrument. Sort of the video game equivalent of a Kinder Surprise egg!”
Sound Shapes was created by Queasy Games for PS3 and PS Vita. Guthrie and his fellow musicians created their own levels for the game, each joining forces with a different visual artist to design them. Guthrie’s level is called CORPOREAL, and found him working with Superbrothers, their first collab since the Sword & Sworcery EP.
