The Science of Pop Music

I’m an over-thinker. It’s not enough for me to like something, I always want to know why I like something. For example: Is it cultural? Genetic? Socio-econmic? Gender?

Good thing I’ve got science working on my side analyzing the intricacies of pop culture. I just came across this study out of the University of Colorado:  "Just How Long is Your Fifteen Minutes?  An Empirical Analysis of Artist's Time on the Popular Charts."

It is the first part of a study analyzing how changes in the music industry affect artist’s careers. It is an interesting read and appeals to my over-analytical brain, but part of me still likes to think an artist has longevity if they are talented and write great songs.

Storm Gloor, UOC assistant professor in the College of Arts and Media, thinks this study is important for artists to plan their careers. I suppose business is important, but it still makes me feel a bit sad.

Am I naïve?

IS THERE MORE TO MUSIC THAN… MUSIC?
OR DOES THE VERY ACT OF ASKING QUESTIONS LIKE THIS SUCK ALL THE JOY OUT OF MUSIC/LIFE?
