Eight and a Half are a Toronto-based band who have reinvented themselves. Originally the members were in Broken Social Scene and The Stills. We got in touch with the band to find out a little bit more about them.
Q: Name your top 5 bands/artists who have reinvented themselves?
A: The Beatles, The Clash, Radiohead, Fleetwood Mac
Q: What is the key to a band reinventing itself (in your opinion)?
A: The first thing is you need is to not be afraid of what anybody is going to say. If you don't like hearing people's opinions you're better off sticking with the program. Also, you have to feel like money is no object so either be rich beforehand, or be fine with maybe moving into a shittier apartment. The best thing for reinvention though is if you're reinvention is really awesome and it makes everybody love you.
Q: What’s your biggest challenge in forming this band?
A: One of the biggest challenges for us was finishing our record last July and waiting till April for it to come out. That's a long time to hold your breath.
Q: What’s your biggest reward?
A: It's impossible to think of one thing being the most rewarding or important end result of anything you do as a musician/artist/thinker. It's important to feel like you are always making some sort of progress in whichever way possible. The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow doesn't really exist. It's what you do to get there.
Q: What is Eight and a Half stand for? What’s the story behind the name?
A: It is many things but the thing it is that is relevant to the question is an umbrella word or term that is currently being used to represent Justin Peroff, Liam O'Neil and David Hamelin's mutual musical collaboration.
