Maybe it's because I grew up in Southern Interior B.C. with a grandfather who raised me on cowboy poetry and Louis L'Amour books... but every once in awhile, I yearn for a great country tune. No, none of this Taylor Swift stuff. It won't do. I want the real deal -- songs about whiskey and fishing and heartbreak and life on the range.
And Kayla Howran's music is country through and through. She grew up in Peterborough in a musical family where everyone played country music.
At first, Kayla said she tried to rebel against those country roots -- she told me how she tried the folk singer-songwriter route, playing Ani DiFranco in her room. Her mom, Kayla said, would sit outside the door and laugh because there was so much twang in even her folkiest renditions.
In the end, Kayla came back to what she knows and loves best. Her debut album, Pistol, is the first release on the new Cameron House label... and you can often find her playing at the Cameron House, too.
Finally, an album I can take home to Grandpa. Though it's now making me want to buy a pick up truck, too...
